Posted @withregram • @ontartgalleries MEET THE PRESENTERS | Faisal Anwar is a hybrid artist who works at the intersection of art, design, and technology to create awe-inspiring, data-driven interventions, interactive installations, internet art, NFTs, and Web 3.0. His work challenges conventional notions of space, time, memory, and human engagement in today's world. Anwar was the chief curator for the Karachi Biennial 2022. He founded CultureLab.art, a studio investigating climate change, wellness, sustainability, emerging economies and social change. He is also a co-founder of Art Address, an artist-led collective that encourages creative ideas and dialogues. His ongoing investigative project, Tweet Garden, was presented at the Contact Photography Festival at the Royal Ontario Museum. Anwar's projects have been showcased globally in various galleries, museums, and festivals, including the Winter Olympics Vancouver 2010 and Nuit-Blanche Festival Toronto.

Due to war, economic precariousness and climate change, more and more people worldwide and within Canada are being forced to move. Artist Faisal Anwar is inviting people to participate in his new interactive artwork and reflect on what “HOME” means.
About the Artist
Faisal Anwar is a Hybrid Artist, Curator Karachi Biennial 22, and creative technologist working between Canada and Pakistan. Founder of CultureLab.art, he explores the intersection of art, science, nature, and data, investigating pressing concerns on climate change, sustainability, and shifts in new emerging economies. He is also a co-founder of ArtAddress, mentoring and fostering creative ideas and dialogue. His creative computational thinking, research, and artistic practice branches through interactive installations, immersive environments, data-driven interventions, internet art, HybridNFT, and MetaVerse / Web 3.0.

Posted @withrepost • @aliyaakbar Curated by Faisal Anwar, The Karachi Biennial 22 ‘Collective Imagination: Now and Next’, is a fitting description for our current global state. This city wide showcase of art from several contemporary Pakistani artists as well as international artists is a diverse sensory description of the ways in which technology was rapidly developed and adapted during the almost apocalyptic situation arising from the Covid pandemic. I was keenly reminded that had this pandemic not occurred during the digital age the economic, communication and mental health tolls would have been far worse than they were.
I enjoyed both the new forms of art I saw, such as Imran Qureshi’s immersive infinity room installation, as well as adaptations to existing practices, such as the way in which Rashid Rana pushed his works forward by embedding QR code’s in the images that, when activated, played videos.
Seen individually these works are contemporary, and captivating .Viewed collectively, they are a strong statement on the creative and intellectual hub Karachi is- not just as a space for arts but as an economic, political and socially progressive city on the global stage. @karachi_biennale @faisalanwarstudio #karachi #kbb22

Is what a self-conscious machine expresses the same thing that it really thinks or believes in?
What if, there is an inner monologue by the machine before communicating to the outside world?
Does a self-aware machine create a certain image (or self-image) of itself?
Therefore, is a machine able to make us believe what it wants us to believe in?
The kinetic sculpture Monolith YW depicts the abstract process of the inner monologue of a self-conscious machine. Based on a semiotic system with 25 binary states (the assumed language model of the machine), the sculpture is constantly in a dynamic process of creating formal consistent expressions (primal thoughts). Vicarious for the subsequent process of evaluating this internal conflict, two juxtaposed white light sources illuminate independently the original expressions from opposite directions.

Posted @withrepost • @karachi_biennale A pioneer in performance art in Pakistan, KB17 curator and KBT trustee Amin Gulgee’s cultural interventions bridge sculpture, installation and performance. He has created a space, vernacular and audience for the performance artist and the genre.
In ‘The Forgotten March’, Gulgee collaborated with the students and teachers of the NJV school for an immersive work at the KB22 inaugural ceremony. NJV was the main venue for the First Karachi Biennale and was a space that KB helped revive and enrich.

We live in a globalised world that is becoming increasingly homogeneous. Languages, plant and animal species are continuously decreasing. Supermarkets, buildings and cities look more and more alike. The "Echolocation" deals with cultural diversity and at the same time with the powerful homogenization forces that are being exerted on this diversity also in the social-digital realm, and poses questions about the meaning of this ever-increasing flattening of forms and images.
In Echolocation users can choose any location on a map and move through stories posted from there by others on social networks like YouTube, Flickr and Twitter. Here these personal impressions are streamed in real time like windows to our changing world. The viewer participates in the social movements of our time and makes a journey into constantly new image and sound collages in which one experiences local, cultural and linguistic differences and more and more similarities.

Posted @withrepost • @karachi_biennale ‘It Lies Beyond’ challenges viewer’s perception of what is inside and outside, close and distant, within and without, real and fictional while bridging and dismantling these binaries simultaneously, opening questions of the “nature versus man-made”. An ominous, serene seascape that, on a closer inspection, reveals the heaps of garbage that it is composed of. This matrix of garbage also contains within it the illustrations and paintings of sailing ships. Through these metaphors, this installation refers to the post-renaissance materialist inquiry, the explorations of and expansions to the other worlds, sea-trade, colonization, industrial revolution, consumerism followed by global climate change resulting in various natural calamities like recent floods – all unfolding as various chapters of a saga that begins and ends with waters.
Rashid Rana is known for his pioneering works in new media art from Pakistan. Notable for conceptual innovation and dramatic visual strategies, Rana depicts the familiar and everyday; encompassing themes such as identity, space-time, and duality. He is the recipient of the 2017 Asia Art Award by the Asia Society (NYC).
His work is on display at NED university City Campus.

To have a group of children from Skardu who study in Lyari come to visit our installation at KB22 was a blessing. It makes our work feel that little bit more significant. Saaz, in that moment, becomes more than just an installation, it becomes a tool for education and we hope to continue to inspire for the remainder of the KB22.

A nihilistic frenzy.
An almost unbearable reality.
We invite audiences to rave on the precipice of the abyss.
Welcome to DISCO APOCALYPSE.
A perspective-warping onslaught of over-saturated colour, lighting and sound. Layered visuals coat the disco’s walls. Shafts of moving light and bass-heavy electronic grooves are felt viscerally. Eight video artworks beam out from screens. People are invited to stay and absorb this hedonistic celebration of end times.
DISCO APOCALYPSE places the artists’ work in the context of a wider society who is in stasis. A society who is unable to take action on climate realities, and who draws on rich environmental and cultural resources for hedonistic pleasure. The DISCO APOCALYPSE is a warning, one that inspires change that’s led by environmental and culturally embedded action.
The disco’s visuals demonstrate processes involving traditional art, science, computational mathematics and graphic-design. The visuals feature First Nations war shields. Shields elicit protective qualities. They’re re-imagined here, by Yorta Yorta Australian artist Lorraine Brigdale, as a tool for the protection of natural ecosystems. Accompanying the shields are enlarged microscope imagery and generative-computational imagery.
DISCO APOCALYPSE was created from audio and visual elements collected and created during the artists’ time in numerous international locations. This immersive art installation features fractured visuals and audio from Amazonia (Brazil), Gamboa (Panama), Batticoloa (Sri Linaka), Karachi (Pakistan), Gili Trawanga (Indonesia) and on Koori lands (Australia). We acknowledge the First Peoples and communities of these lands. We came to these landscapes with presence and intention and pay respect to the culture, lives and struggles of these peoples and lands. In making and presenting this artwork, we gratefully acknowledge First People’s custodianship and connection to landscape.

The highlights of the inaugural events included a musical performance on the ancient Sindhi Borindo by Faqir Zulfiqar. There was also performance art, titled Forgotten March, by Amin Gulgee featuring students of the NJV school. But most notable were the four striking art installations housed in four large rooms, one devoted to each exhibit.

Deep in Sindh 4+ hours outside of Karachi potter Allahjhurrio and Faqir Zulfiqar have both been deeply generous with their welcome and openness. It has been a real privilege to watch them work and listen to their stories of the interconnectedness of their land and history with their craft and art. This is shown most clearly through the making of the Borindo. We witnessed the full process of creation from clay thrown on the wheel into the basic shape, then the individual tuning of each instrument. They are then baked in the sun and two days later pit fired over 24 hours in dung, hay and old pottery. This instrument can be traced directly back 5000 years here in Sindh, resurrected and updated by the Faaqir's father and Allahjhurrio who increased the musical reach of the borrindo by adding further holes for more notes. This instrument embodies the land and culture that stretches far far back and in playing it there is a communion with the land, its history and the families who both live and are buried there. We end with the Faqir singing us a song about this land. 'With a distinct practice that explores emerging technologies and employs data produced and collected in real-time, Anwar is arguably the only Pakistani artist who is adept and well informed to assess the hybrid nature of art where art, technology, and other disciplines collide. A new media and contemporary artist working in the digital medium. Anwar's work respond to spatial surroundings to encourage the interaction and curiosity while raising potent questions.
His work #CharBagh is named after the term that refers to the Persian/Islamic-style quadrilateral garden divided by walkways into four smaller paths intersecting at the garden's center. This is a metaphor for the organization and domestication of the landscape and a symbol of socio-politixal territory.
Using an open network data, #CharBagh is an ever-evolving, dynamic digital garden that grows over time with incoming streams of large public data. The project examines today's socio-political realities, questioning the changing human behaviours, and how we access and interpret information.
"Charbagh is much more than just an architectural form of participatory art - it is a symbol of coexistence and sustainable living for contemporary times" deconfine festival.

Presented at the exhibition Garden in the Machine at Surrey Art Gallery, Vancouver, CharBagh uses social media to generate a digital garden. The garden is mapped on the Persian-style Islamic garden known aschar bagh(four gardens). The artwork grows out of workshops, with Surrey residents responding to questions on sustainable food production, climate change, and nature.
CharBagh was also the new media installation presented on the facade of the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto, and inside the Ismaili Centre as part of Nuit Blanche 2016. Curated by Zulifkar Hirji, it worked with open data to explore our contemporary sociopolitical territories.

Like restless clouds, our memories build up in the sky of our consciousness. They remain in silence, floating in the quiet mind. It is only when we stop and look up that we realize our memories are like cloud-shaped snapshots of our lives, which are anchored by threads of our happiness and melancholia. At that moment, time that sits on the horizon of such memory clouds reveals a past that is tied to the extraordinary present reality.
Up in the Sky High takes the past photo archives of Scotiabank #nuitblanche as a starting point and invites the viewer to explore the infinite potential within their memory clouds, revealing its incredible beauty while sharing enriching thoughts.
Large clusters of white eco-friendly balloons are suspended in the space with photo memories hanging below, creating a "memory lane" allowing viewers to navigate through the still memories and the delicate sounds of movement.
Faisal Anwar is a New Media artist who brings together art, culture and technology in odd configurations to explore social interactivity in modern urban cultures. He has shown at many exhibitions worldwide including the Vancouver Winter Olympics (2010), Scotiabank Nuit Blanche (2006/08/10/12), Nuit Blanche NY (2011), Six Degrees of Separation (India, Pakistan & Bangladesh, 2009) and The Menasa Studio Dispatches in Dubai (2011). Pioneer art residency_Volume III, #Khushaab, #Pakistan. A collaboration with #Canvas gallery and Pioneer Cement Factory
I worked with found objects on site. Using two large discarded old metal rings, and multiple steel wires that converge, I constructed an abstract environment, creating an in-between space using points, line and geometry offering multiple viewpoints and evoke different meanings based on where one stands. Juxtaposing nature and structure, the work creates a disruption in the continuity of the place, time and movement.

WordMapMind (videoclip): Text and art have been intertwined for centuries, from illuminated manuscripts to surrealism, cubism, and all the way to contemporary art, many artists increasingly focused on text in their art. From projections to canvases, sculptures to public murals, and advertising to political activism, the versatility, and power of the written word always encourages the viewer to reflect. WordMapMind is a video work inspired by the works of the American artist Jenny Holzer, who is known for her text-based projections, which took advantage of what was then new technology in the 80s to broadcast her messages to a wide audience. Using direct language, and often juxtaposing phrases, she forces the public to confront societal issues. Using a similar methodology artist Faisal Anwar reflects on the times today realizing how little control we humans have over nature, time, and what holds next. Possibly an opportunity to #reflect, #rethink, and align ourselves with #nature and the #universe.

WORDMapMind. Inspired by the iconic performance ‘The artist is present’ by #Marina #Abramovic, the artist Faisal Anwar is presenting ‘The artist is Live’ a performance to inviting online visitors to observe him with hundreds of live mobile and desktop steaming cameras, devices on an open platform. Using open source tool created by Kyle Phillips, Claire Kearney-Volpe, Luisa Pereira, Yotam Mann, and Google Creative Lab.
In #Abramovic performance, she pushed the limits of the body, mind, and explored the complex relationship between the artist and audience, discovering an emotional, intellectual and physical connection when in close physical proximity. Anwar’s performance builds upon the artist's vulnerability with invisible distance, connecting timezones and the virtual and real adaptations in present digital global
culture. His performance is a comment on the nature of connections and relationships in the virtual space, the illusion of power and the growing culture of misinformation and online aggression. In the short
experimental performance, Anwar invites audiences to observe him from the comfort of their own homes and discover if a connection is made.

Sharing one of my older work . re-place 2007/08 intrigues the mind and emotion by juxtaposing contrasting visual elements; bodies, faces, personalities, buildings and neighborhoods. re-palce explore history of immigrants in Canada and between (1800 to 1900) and creates fictional narratives around them. The work explores patterns of human migrations along with a self-exploration of what it means to be part of an immigrant legacy, how and why people relocate, bringing their stories to a different land and what happened to those stories.

Re (locate) I selected two large discarded old metal rings found on site, and multiple steel wires that converge to construct an abstract environment creating an in-between space using points, line and geometry offering multiple viewpoints and evoke different meanings based on where one stands in it. Juxtaposing nature and structure, the work creates a disruption in the continuity of the place, time and movement. .

A FEAST IN EXILE” A Tableau Vivant

This project was presented by VASL artists’ collective in collaboration with Alliance de Francaise Karachi. ‘A Feast in Exile’ was created during a teaching residency hosted by Vasl Artists’ Collective and Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture.
Artists, Faisal Anwar and Tazeen Qayyum spent 4 weeks with the 3rd year Fine art students at the Fine Art department at Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture and created a unique performance in which an 18th century miniature painting of Kangra School, was recreated in the style of a Tableau Vivant. The project included live music specially composed by Babar Sheikh, Rizwan-ullah Khan, Jasir Abro and Aziz Kazi.

I found myself struggling, and pondering if it’s real or or nightmare. I could see the evident social disparity where the rich gets richer and the poor get poorer. The country had changed just in 3 years. I felt a constant fear in people of being robbed and asked to give their belongings on a gun point. Now living with a constant terror of being under surveillance, victims of social injustice. Is it the end of feudalism and a start of capitalism? or now both? It seems as if no one cares and the mind-set is that you fabricate your life and let me handle mine. “A FEAST IN EXILE” A Tableau Vivant

This project was presented by VASL artists’ collective in collaboration with Alliance de Francaise Karachi. ‘A Feast in Exile’ was created during a teaching residency hosted by Vasl Artists’ Collective and Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. Artists, Faisal Anwar and Tazeen Qayyum spent 4 weeks with the 3rd year Fine art students at the Fine Art department at Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture and created a unique performance in which an 18th century miniature painting of Kangra School, was recreated in the style of a Tableau Vivant. The project included live music specially composed by Babar Sheikh, Rizwan-ullah Khan, Jasir Abro and Aziz Kazi.
